How long will it take for the native warm season grasses to produce seeds?
The grasses take up to three years to mature and begin producing seeds; however under ideal conditions they will begin producing in as little as two years.
When do I plant native warm season grasses?
Native warm season grasses are planted from late winter (late February) until the middle of April.
Why is the field planted at such a heavy rate, 10 pounds per acre?
The rate is higher than traditionally used in conservation settings because we are planting for seed production. The plants are planted closer together making the tillers grow up instead of out. This gives the producer a higher yield.
What type of maintenance is required to have a productive stand of Switchgrass?
Maintenance is tailored to each field. Fields require diffent herbicide treatment during each step of the growing process; however Audubon will work with you to ensure the proper herbicide and application rate.
